Shell buys electric vehicle station operator Volta for $169 million

Volta operates 3,050 EV chargers in the US and Europe with another 3,400 in the pipeline

Last year, Volta was second only to Tesla in customer satisfaction for Tier 2 chargers. It largely operates stations in high-traffic retail parking lots and provides free electricity to EV drivers, with revenue from advertising.

The combination of the future Volta, owned by Shell USA, plus Greenlots (owned by Shell New Energies and renamed Shell Recharge Solutions), adds up to more than 57,000 charging stations under the yellow and red scallop. Shell New Energies is also working on other alternative energy projects, such as offshore wind farms in New Jersey.
