All our coverage of the Panic Playdate handheld

Panic’s little yellow handheld has sold much more than expected. Today, the company confirmed that the Playdate has sold 53,000 copies, more than double the original production of 20,000. However, a large number of those customers are still waiting to get started: Panic says it has shipped 27,000 of those orders, and “the team is hard at work getting customers their Playdates and fully expects all pre-orders to be delivered by the end of this year.”

In a statement, Playdate project lead Greg Maletic said: “When we started, we had no idea how big the audience would be for a weird product like this, but we told the factory, build 20,000. That we have now sold more than 53,000 (and counting) is heartwarming. And that at a time when a shortage of parts forced our delivery times to be up to a year. As those lead times get shorter and Playdate delivery gets faster, we look forward to an even better year two.
